Dr Isolde Hertess

BSc, MBBS, ADD (Advanced Dermatology Diploma), FRACS (Fellow of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons - Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery)

Dr Hertess completed her medical degree from the prestigious Melbourne University Medical School in 1986, after first completing her undergraduate Bachelor of Science degree. Following this initial 8 years of study, she began her specialist training journey where she was one of the few female aspiring-surgeons accepted into the specialty training fellowship in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery with the Royal Australian College of Surgeons (FRACS).

She then went on to complete a further 6 years of the rigorous surgical training fellowship throughout hospitals in Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane and Cairns which she completed in 1994 earning her specialist qualification as a Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon.

When Dr Hertess qualified as a Plastic Surgeon, less than 3% of the World's Plastic Surgeon's were female!

She then went on to establish her private practice in Cairns where she cared for and supported the Cairns community for 25+ years. She has now permanently relocated to John Flynn Hospital on the Gold Coast where she aspires for continuity of her excellence in wholehearted care and support for the Gold Coast community and for many years to come.

For over 25 years, Dr Isolde Hertess has applied her comprehensive knowledge and procedural skills to the full spectum of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and is deeply passionate about helping improve the self-esteem of patients of all ages and backgrounds. She values establishing open and honest lines of communication with her patients along with an individualised surgical plan for each patient based on their specific needs.

Dr Hertess has a keen interest in skin cancer medicine. She performs a wide range of skin-lesion related procedures performing everything from topical, injectable, laser and light treatments as well as surgical excisions, skin grafts and skin flaps all the way through to advanced-stage tumour repairs, lesions with cartilage or bony involvements and combination surgeries.

Besides skin lesion surgery, she has a special interest in breast surgery where she performs the full range; augmentation, lift/reduction, procedures for asymmetry, implant exchange, male breast reduction, transgender breast surgery & nipple/areolar surgery.

She also performs weight loss and body contouring surgery of the arms and legs, face lift, neck lift, brow lift, ear and earlobe surgery. As well as regularly performing combinations of these surgeries, the most common being mummy makeovers, which include breast surgery along with either a mini or full tummy tuck.

During her time in practice, she has volunteered her services in community boxing in North QLD as well as getting her pilot's license and working with the Royal Flying Doctor Service for communities in need. She believes that we should never stop learning and growing. She has studied multiple additional diplomas such as her Advanced Dermatology Diploma in 2014 and is one of the few specialist plastic surgeons completing the postgraduate Masters of Medicine in Skin Cancer, which she is due to complete in early 2023. She also regularly publishes and contributes to journals and manuscripts in the scientific community.

In her personal life, she is a mother of 3 adult children (including twin daughters), a fur-baby mother of her 4 rescue dogs and an avid cycler with a keen interest in road cycling events.
